Description

Marc-Antoine Charpentier was an exceptionally prolific and versatile French composer of the Baroque period, producing compositions of the very highest quality throughout his life. He composed his motet Te Deum in D major between 1688 and 1698, it was originally written for a group of soloists, choir, and instrumental accompaniment. It is believed that it was written to mark the victory of the French over William, Prince of Orange at the Battle of Steinkirk in August 1692 in what is present day Belgium. Charpentier considered the key of D major as bright and warlike. Interestingly it was chosen in 1954 as the theme music by the new European Broadcasting Union, used notably before the popular Eurovision Song Contest.

Rex Richardson

“This is joyous stuff; an intelligent, coherent crossover disc, performed with phenomenal punch. Brilliantly recorded too – what’s the point of assembling a collective of virtuoso brass players if they can’t make your ears bleed ?”
