Description

Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. His innovations in the Harlem stride style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano. Clarence Williams was also an American jazz pianist, composer, promoter, vocalist, theatrical producer, and publisher. Williams was a good businessman too and worked arranging and managing entertainment at the local African-American vaudeville theatre and at various saloons and dance halls around Rampart Street. Williams started a music publishing business which by the 1920’s was the leading African-American owned music publisher in the country.

“The arrangements all sound fresh, and the playing is beyond reproach.”

“Simply some of the most exciting and triumphant brass playing I have ever heard!”

“This intriguing "water-borne" voyage runs the gamut from more classically-tinged interpretations to straight-ahead and improvised jazz. Along that journey we are treated to a highly inspired and masterfully presented performance.”

“Many recordings over the last few decades have demonstrated the superb quality of British brass playing; 'Under the Spell of Spain' will rightfully take its place among them.”
