Description

Released as the lead single from his debut studio album True, Wake Me Up was written by Avicii, Mike Einziger, and American soul singer Aloe Blacc, who provides vocals for the track. Mike Einziger provides acoustic guitar, while Peter Dyer provides keyboard on the song. Avicii introduced Wake Me Up for the first time live on stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami. The experimental rendering (it was accompanied by a live band with instruments and vocalists) reportedly confused and angered a section of the electronic dance festival community. Subsequently, Avicii achieved critical and commercial success with the release of the single worldwide. In an interview Avicii, labelled the song as "a fun experiment”.

Avicii, born Tim Bergling (8 September 1989 – 20 April 2018) was a Swedish DJ and music producer. At age 16, he began posting his remixes on electronic music forums, which led to his first record deal. He rose to prominence in 2011 with his single Levels. Bergling was nominated for a Grammy Award for his work on Sunshine with David Guetta in 2012 and Levels in 2013. Several music publications credit Bergling as among the DJs who ushered electronic music into Top 40 radio in the early 2010s. Bergling retired from touring in 2016, after several years of stress and poor mental health. On 20 April 2018, he died by suicide while on holiday in Muscat, Oman.

Michael Aaron Einziger (born June 21, 1976) is an American musician, songwriter and producer. He is best known for being co-founder and guitarist of the rock band Incubus, and has also co-written, produced and collaborated with a wide array of artists including Pharrell Williams, Hans Zimmer, Skrillex, Tyler the Creator, Damian Marley and Steve Martin. Incubus has sold over 23 Million albums worldwide and in 2013. As an entrepreneur, Einziger is the co-founder and co-chairman of the wireless technology platform MIXhalo and also the co-founder and CEO of the biotechnology start-up Versicolor Technologies.

Egbert Nathaniel Dawkins III (born January 7, 1979) known professionally as Aloe Blacc is an American singer-songwriter and rapper. He is best known for his guest performance on Avicii's 2013 single Wake Me Up. As a lead artist, he is known for his singles, I Need a Dollar and The Man. Aside from his solo career, Blacc is also a member of hip hop duo Emanon, alongside American record producer Exile.

“This intriguing "water-borne" voyage runs the gamut from more classically-tinged interpretations to straight-ahead and improvised jazz. Along that journey we are treated to a highly inspired and masterfully presented performance.”
